The Wall Street Journal reported today that Canadian Prime Minister Carney is seeking to strengthen ties with the European Union and is exploring the possibility of Canada becoming an “associate member” of the bloc.
While the EU has historically lacked flexibility regarding membership rules, unnamed EU and Canadian officials cited by the newspaper indicated that the EU is open to granting Canada an “associate member” status—a category that has yet to be established.
