Andrzej Sapkowski, the author and creator of The Witcher, has confirmed he is hard at work on Geralt’s next adventure and hinted to IGN that “anything is possible” regarding future prequels. Sapkowski confirmed that writing has begun on his next novel set in The Witcher universe, with the Polish author aiming to complete the work by 2027.
According to Redanian Intelligence, Sapkowski revealed during an appearance at the Copernicon convention in Toruń, Poland, that he has finished the outline for the next book and is currently in the process of writing it. While specific plot details remain under wraps, Sapkowski dismissed the idea when asked by a fan if he would consider writing a novel centered on other characters—such as Yennefer of Vengerberg—confirming instead that the story will once again focus on Geralt of Rivia.
This news aligns perfectly with comments Sapkowski made in a recent interview with IGN, alongside his English translator, David French. When asked if there was still room to explore Geralt’s formative years following the prequel novel A Question of Price (which chronicles the story of an 18-year-old Geralt), Sapkowski gave a characteristically sharp reply: “Room? Of course; there is still plenty to write about.”
Although Sapkowski has not explicitly confirmed that the next novel will definitely be another Geralt prequel, it would not be a stretch to speculate that this might be the case. Furthermore, Sapkowski revealed to IGN that he is open to revisiting the short story format—the same format used for The Last Wish, the book that launched The Witcher series. Sapkowski explained: “Writing a good short story is no easy task. It is far more difficult than writing a novel… but pulling it off demonstrates an author’s true craftsmanship. Crafting a straight line from point A to point B—beautifully and logically—while keeping the total word count under roughly 8,000 words is challenging… To answer your question: yes, I am considering writing more short stories.”
If Sapkowski completes the work by the end of 2027 as planned, Polish readers will likely see the new book hit shelves in late 2027 or sometime in 2028, with translations in other languages expected to follow shortly thereafter—likely in late 2028 or 2029. If this timeline holds, the gap between A Road with No Return (the prequel story) and the next work would be just four years, marking Sapkowski’s fastest release pace since The Lady of the Lake in 1999.
From this perspective, the Witcher franchise is clearly showing no signs of slowing down. First, a series of full-cast audio dramas will roll out throughout the remainder of 2026 and into 2027. Kicking things off is the aforementioned Witcher prequel A Road with No Return, followed by The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny in November. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. On the video game front, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered is set for release on September 29, featuring a host of new functions and performance updates. Additionally, there is the surprise announcement of a third Witcher 3 expansion, A Song of Old Times, arriving in 2027; meanwhile, The Witcher 4—starring Ciri—has been confirmed for a 2028 release. Season 5 of the Netflix Witcher series has reportedly been pushed to 2027, though it, too, is on the horizon.
